Choose the part you want to control

Refocus deserves attention if you want detailed choices about when an app blocks and what must happen before unblocking. Badger is an alternative for iPhone users who want a personal agent involved in a plan, with optional requests from another assistant. Start by deciding whether the problem is a whole app, a website, a particular feed or the ease of changing your own rule.

Whole-app blocks and website changes

Refocus's feature documentation describes immediate blocks, schedules, usage limits and location-based blocking. It also documents hiding YouTube Shorts and parts of Instagram in Safari on supported iOS versions. That last feature changes the website experience; it is not a claim to remove Reels from the native Instagram app.

Someone who needs Instagram messages but wants fewer website-feed distractions may care about that distinction. Someone who wants the native app unavailable during work is making a different choice. Before selecting any blocker for selective filtering, write down the exact surface you use: native app, Safari website or another browser. Similar feature names can conceal a decisive platform limit.

Choose your own unlock constraint

Refocus documents a passcode, limits on daily unblocks, an NFC-tag requirement, waiting and copying text as different release controls. A user who enjoys defining a specific exception process may prefer those settings. For example, a countdown before changing a rule is a different commitment from walking to an NFC tag; neither should be treated as a universal definition of strictness.

Badger's personal agent offers a conversational way to work with the plan. Explain the goal and a genuine change in circumstances; the action connected to access can change. Asking alone may not end a commitment. Its emergency unblock is important to learn beforehand. This is not evidence that Badger is always more flexible or that Refocus cannot accommodate exceptions.

Apple devices and the Mac beta

Refocus advertises iPhone, iPad and Mac products. Its help page labels the Mac app beta, even while its Mac product page describes desktop app and website blocking. A beta desktop product and a phone feature should be evaluated separately. If you want a boundary on both devices, verify both installations instead of assuming a setting on one controls the other.

The blocking troubleshooting page also discusses Screen Time platform issues and potential interference from multiple blockers. Do not assume stacking several apps guarantees stronger enforcement. Start with a small setup, check the current OS guidance, and test the restrictions and release path you actually need.

Where an external assistant fits

Badger includes its own proactive agent, and connecting another assistant is optional. The external interface lets a supported assistant list authorized iPhone group names and identifiers and request blocks or unblocks with reasons. It does not return group membership, screen-time activity or confirmed device state. Active commitments may reject requests; check a selected app on the phone after acceptance.

This is useful when you want to initiate phone focus from a conversation where you already plan tasks. It does not establish native-feed filtering, desktop blocking or automatic awareness of what you are doing in other apps. Choose Refocus if granular rules or its documented Safari controls are the requirement; choose Badger if personal-agent involvement is the reason you want a different app.

Plans and a useful trial

Refocus is a free download with paid Pro options. A dependable current full-plan amount was not established from the reviewed primary sources, so check the live offer and renewal terms. Old third-party price lists are not a substitute. Badger's availability and price should be checked separately, and no savings claim is made here.

Does Safari filtering change the native Instagram app? The reviewed feature is explicitly for Safari. Is the Mac app described as final? The help documentation calls it beta. Must an NFC unlock use a proprietary accessory? The feature page describes an NFC tag; confirm compatible tags in its setup instructions rather than assuming a branded hardware purchase.
